Garnaut confirms need for strong, early action

Sir Nicholas Stern re-shaped the way economists thought about climate change when he delivered his groundbreaking report in 2006.

The Stern Review found the global impacts of climate change where far higher than the cost of reducing emissions.

The study currently being conducted by veteran Australian economist Ross Garnaut has been called by some 'the Australian Stern Review'.

Professor Garnaut's interim report says Australia has an "exceptional sensitivity to climate change" and warns we will be "possibly the biggest loser amongst developed countries" if we fail to rein in emissions.

Just as Stern rang the alarm bells for the world, Garnaut has sounded a siren for Australia.

Professor Garnaut also turned another piece of conventional wisdom on its head.

On the House: There is help in a power outage

It's the force behind your heater, your lights, your TV and computer. It's your power supply, and if you take it for granted, you might be left in the dark.

When the lights go out, food also starts to spoil and heat and cold shut off — often in extreme temperatures, creating a health concern for children and the elderly. And what's worse, sump pumps in basements and crawl spaces won't operate when they are most needed to discharge storm water, which can lead to thousands of dollars of damage.

Being without power for few hours is a nuisance. Not having power for days, weeks or even longer can be both costly and dangerous.

The good news is that an automatic standby generator can return your home to full power within seconds. It works even when you're not home.

Should non-firearms Met officers be allowed to use Tasers?

These people breeding these animals to fight and attack anyone or anything they see should be charged with manslaughter if there animal kill a human being(if it is a banned dog) and with carrying an offensive weapon with intent to do bodily harm if found in possession of a banned dog on our streets. .

Foo Fighters -- still fighting

When I came home, my son didn't want anything to do with me for about a week, until he remembered who I was. So we decided if we're going out for more than two weeks, to have everyone come out, and that's been going great. Except now my son has a little trouble realizing what's home. He thinks he has an L.A. house and a New York house now instead of just hotels.

Q One of the things that struck me about your current tour is how clearly you guys have embraced being an arena-rock act and putting on an arena kind of show. Considering you all have punk roots, was that a hard transition?

A It's a new challenge. We had to. We could have kept playing in the same size venues that we were playing before, but we decided it was the natural evolution of the band. Dave writes the songs, and these are the kinds of songs he likes to write.

Fire destroys house on Pebble Hills Drive

A Wednesday night fire destroyed a new home under construction near the Pebble Lake Golf Course in Fergus Falls.

In 15-below weather, the Fergus Falls Fire Department worked to extinguish the blaze at 3820 Pebble Hills Drive, where Mike and Annie Alt are building a new home.

Firefighters were called to the scene at about 8 p.m. Wednesday.

By the time the department arrived, the house was a loss, said Fergus Falls Fire Chief Mark Hovland.

Firefighters worked to put out the blaze and protect the house next door, 40 to 50 feet away. Windows in that house cracked from the heat.

“If it hadn't had cement siding, we would have had another house lost," Hovland.

Frigid temperatures — winds at 5 mph and a -24 below wind chill — made it challenging for firemen to do their jobs, Hovland said.

Preparing for a storm

Monday starts Severe Weather Preparedness Week, a statewide effort to bring the attention of Hoosiers to threats posed by tornadoes and thunderstorms. The goal of the week, which ends Friday, is to better educate people about the hazards of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, and to help everyone be prepared should severe weather occur. So families can practice their severe weather safety plans, the National Weather Service will conduct a statewide test of communication systems on Wednesday between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. and between 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. If weather postpones Wednesday's drill, a make-up drill will be conducted at the same times on Friday. For additional information on preparedness for severe weather and other emergencies, go to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security Web site at www.in.gov/dhs/3638.htmBefore the storm Develop a plan for you and your family for home, work school and when outdoors.
